Goodbye from SLGS!

SLGS, the South Lincolnshire Garden Society, “Slugs”
– it was known by many aliases – was a friendly, enthusiastic society for keen gardeners, nurserymen, nurserywomen, horticulturists and plantspeople – in fact, anyone with an interest in plants and gardening, whether experienced or eager to learn more. Most of our members lived and gardened somewhere within a 20–25-mile radius of Folkingham (see map), which is where our indoor meetings were held.

SLGS held its final meeting (a Study Day with three excellent speakers and a buffet meal) at Folkingham on Saturday 28 May 2022. It was a very enjoyable, if poignant, farewell event that was attended by a good number of current and past members, including some founder-members of the Society.

We have 5 indoor meetings a year, held on the fourth Thursday of the month, in alternate months from September to May inclusive, at Folkingham Village Hall. We also organise garden visits and coach trips at various times in between.

Sounds complicated? It isn’t really, but the latest programme page (see link above) has all the dates and details of our forthcoming speakers and events. Fuller details can be found on the Speakers page (with links to their websites, where appropriate).

Not sure whether you want to join or not? Try us out! You are welcome to come to our indoor meetings if you pay at the door (normally £5, except for special events). Non-members may also join one of our coach trips as a guest of a member, or when, as sometimes happens, we join forces with another local garden club.

Members had free admission to all indoor meetings (except for certain special events, when there may be a small extra charge) and enjoyed preferential rates for coach outings.

SLGS was affiliated to the Royal Horticultural Society, which means that, as a member of SLGS, you had various benefits, including free advice from RHS experts and reduced admission for RHS Shows.

Membership

SLGS has now been disbanded. All remaining funds, after the settling of the expenses for our final Study Day, will be donated to gardening charity Perennial.

NO MEMBERSHIP FEES ARE DUE FOR 2021 OR 2022. (Because of Covid-19 disruption to our programme, existing memberships have been carried over.)

It has now been decided that SLGS will be disbanded; one final Study Day for members will be held at a date to be announced.

SLGS membership is just £14 per year or £21 for two people at the same address. Normally, membership runs from 1 January to 31 December, but if you join us on or after 1 September your first subscription will run until 31 December the following year, giving you up to 16 months’ membership for the price of 12. You can join at any time of year.
